J’ai le cœur lourd de vous annoncer le décès de mon cher frère Souleymane Arouna, survenu aujourd’hui.
Souleymane était une force de la nature, un être d’une présence si marquée que, qu’on l’apprécie ou non, il ne laissait personne indifférent.
En cette période de profonde tristesse, nous pensons à tous ceux qui ont eu le privilège de connaître Souleymane. Son parcours, empreint de courage et de détermination, a touché de nombreuses vies, bien au-delà de notre cercle familial.

Je me trouvais hors des États-Unis lorsque j’ai reçu la nouvelle de son décès, une nouvelle qui m’a été transmise par son médecin et son épouse Annick.
Actuellement en escale, en route vers Washington, je prends la plume, ému et bouleversé, après avoir constaté de nombreux appels en absence. Sachez que dès mon retour à Washington et une fois les dispositions pratiques prises, nous informerons tous ceux qui ont connu et aimé Souleymane des arrangements à venir.
Nous vous demandons de vous joindre à nous dans la prière pour le repos de l’âme de mon frère Souleymane. Que vos pensées accompagnent également son épouse Annick, et ses deux enfants, Imad et Bilal, en ces moments d’une douleur incommensurable.
Bien que différents dans notre style, Souleymane et moi partagions une même graine patriotique, une conviction profonde qui façonne les grands hommes. Malgré une présence trop courte sur cette terre, il est indéniable que Souleymane a marqué son époque. Depuis Porto-Novo, où il fut un leader charismatique des mouvements de grève scolaire et de désobéissance civile ayant conduit au renouveau démocratique, et qui lui ont valu un séjour de plusieurs mois dans les geôle du Petit Palais de Cotonou, jusqu’à Dakar et aux États-Unis, où il a été une figure emblématique de la diaspora béninoise, son héritage demeure vivant.
Je regrette de ne pas lui avoir dit assez de son vivant combien j’étais fier de lui et de ses accomplissements.
